Wall Street pointed higher before the open Friday as most major markets looked set to end the week with solid gains. Futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average both edged 0.3% higher before the bell.Shares of The Gap jumped more than 18% in off-hours trading after the fashion retailer breezed past Wall Street profit forecasts even as sales lagged from a year ago.It’s been a busy week for retail earnings, with Target, Home Depot and Macy’s all reporting better-than-expected profits for the most recent quarter, though sales have lagged over the same period last year. ESPOO, Finland (AP) — Kao Miura took the lead in the short program ahead of Japanese teammate Shun Sato at the Grand Prix Espoo on Friday as he tries to earn a spot at figure skating’s Grand Prix Finals.Miura, last season’s world junior champion, landed a clean quadruple salchow-triple toeloop combination, triple axel and quad toeloop for 93.54 points. Sato scored 90.41 points with a quad toeloop-triple toeloop combination, quad flip and triple axel.Jimmy Ma of the United States was 10 points further back in third with 80.19 after some small errors, including putting a hand down on the landing of his triple axel. SAN ANTONIO, Texas (WSVN) — A Texas puppy is now safe and sound after a harrowing ordeal in a sewer line in San Antonio.The San Antonio Water System crew members, capturing the entire rescue on video, pulled little Pipa to safety. Named after the pipe in Spanish, Pipa and her siblings were playing outside when they accidentally fell into a pipe near their front yard. While two siblings were quickly rescued, Pipa required more effort.After an extensive rescue operation, San Antonio Animal Care Services took Pipa to a local vet for overnight observation before reuniting her with her owners. Although initially named “Damsel,” based on her recovery, the owner may consider putting her up for adoption when she is older.

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s medicines regulator has authorized the world’s first gene therapy treatment for sickle cell disease, in a move that could offer relief to thousands of people with the crippling disease in the U.K.In a statement Thursday, the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency said it approved Casgevy, the first medicine licensed using the gene editing tool CRISPR, which won its makers a Nobel prize in 2020.The agency approved the treatment for patients with sickle cell disease and thalassemia who are 12 years old and over. Casgevy is made by Vertex Pharmaceuticals (Europe) Ltd. and CRISPR Therapeutics. (CNN) — Nearly 450 patients at a hospital in Massachusetts could have been exposed to hepatitis and HIV due to improper administration of IV medication within the past two years, according to hospital officials.The possible exposure at Salem Hospital affected patients who were seeking an endoscopy, a type of procedure where a doctor inserts a tubelike instrument into the body for examination, the hospital said in a statement Thursday. The hospital did not provide further details about how the possible exposure may have occurred.Salem Hospital has notified all patients who may have been exposed and tested people for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV, which are “standard tests for a potential exposure of this kind,” a hospital spokesperson told CNN in an email.“There is no evidence to date of any infections resulting from this incident,” the hospital said in the statement. “We have determined that the infection risk to patients from this event is extremely small. … We sincerely ap...
