AUSTIN (KXAN) — A years-long fight to close a controversial legal gap known as the "dead suspect loophole" has finally come to an end. This development comes days after the one-year anniversary of the Uvalde mass shooting that killed 19 children and two teachers, which put a spotlight on the importance of public records, transparency and the truth.After some back-and-forth disagreements, on the last full day of the legislative session, the House and Senate hammered out a last-minute compromise on HB 30. With both chambers signing off, the bill now goes to the governor to sign into law.At issue was the "dead suspect loophole," an exemption in the Texas Public Information Act that gives police discretion to withhold records from the public in cases where a suspect doesn't go through the court process. An air quality alert has been issued until 8 p.m. Monday, according to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.The alert began on noon Sunday for east central and southeast Minnesota, including the Twin Cities metro along with St. Cloud, Hinckley, Mankato, Albert Lea, Rochester and the tribal nations of Prairie Island, Leech Lake and Mille Lacs.Ground-level ozone projections are high for the holiday weekend, as a combination of sun, low humidity and warm temperatures is hospitable for the chemical reactions that turn pollutants into ozone.The agency said air quality is expected to reach the Orange AQI category, which is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, including:Those with asthma or other breathing conditions.Children and teenagers.People doing heavy or extended sports or outdoor activities.Those sensitive to ozone.Recommended precautions for those of any age or physical condition include:Take it easy and listen to your bodyLimit, change, or postpone your physical activityS...

Body found in St. Croix River ID’ed as missing teen who fell into the water in April

A body recovered Friday from the St. Croix River near Taylors Falls, Minn., has been identified as missing teen D’Andrea Sanvig.On April 11, the 18-year-old from Luck, Wis., apparently lost his footing and fell from a rock ledge into the swollen and swiftly moving river at Interstate State Park.An extensive rescue effort involving multiple agencies and spanning several days followed but turned up no sign of Sanvig.On Friday morning, people canoeing reported a body floating in the water not far from where Sanvig fell.The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office classified his death as a drowning.“Over the past month, extensive efforts have been put forth in an attempt to locate D’Andrea,” the Chisago County sheriff’s office said in a press release. “We are grateful his family is able to move towards closure from this situation.”Related ArticlesCrime & Public Safety | Authorities ask for help in finding missing Bemidji woman, 32 Crime &...

3 shot inside hot pot restaurant in Orange County

Three people were taken to the hospital after a shooting late Saturday night at a restaurant in Garden Grove.  The gunfire erupted at around 11:30 p.m. at The Hot Lounge & Restaurant at 12911 Magnolia Street where, according to police, three adult males were wounded.  Two of the victims, both men, were shot in the upper chest and are listed in critical condition. A third victim, also an adult male, was shot in the lower torso and is listed in stable condition. The victims are in their 30s and 40s.  According to police, the three men and the suspect were all dining inside the restaurant when an argument broke out right before the shooting.Right after the shooting, restaurant patrons were able to detain the suspect before officers arrived.  Video shows a man being detained by police officers and it appears that he was being combative with officers.
